108 Fr. Walter Ciszek – “The Mass Gave Us Strength”
Friday Apr 28, 2023
Friday Apr 28, 2023
Fr. Walter Ciszek, S.J., (1904-1984) was born in Shenandoah, PA. He entered the Society of Jesus, and soon after he volunteered to be—after his ordination—a missionary to Russia. Ordained in 1937, he was assigned to a Parish in Albertyn, Poland. After the Russian invasion of Poland, he went with another priest toward Russia, in search for work. But the conditions were miserable, and the prospect very dark. Fr. Ciszek was faced with a terribly disappointing situation. In the midst of that desolation, the only strength was the occasional celebration of the holy Mass, in secret and in the woods… His priesthood, and the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist helped Fr. Ciszek persevere through terrible hardships. What is there in the Mass, what is there in the Priesthood of Jesus Christ that can give us such interior strength and endurance?
- Fr. Walter Ciszek’s LIFE story can be read in the book: Walter Ciszek, With God in Russia, Ignatius Press, San Francisco, 1997.
- Fr. Walter Ciszek’s spiritual commentary to his story (and the quote I read in the episode) can be found in: Walter Ciszek, He Leadeth Me, Image, New York, 1973.

105 The Priesthood, A Gift of the Heart of Jesus
Friday Mar 31, 2023
Friday Mar 31, 2023
“The Priest is a gift from the Heart of Christ” said Pope Benedict XVI in June 2010, quoting St. John Vianney, the Curé of Ars (France). There is no Eucharist without the Priesthood. The priest is chosen from among the people to serve the people in the things that refer to God. Only the priest can consecrate the Body and Blood of Christ, and only the priest can absolve sins in sacramental Confession. Today I talk about the priesthood, and why it is such a gift from Jesus to the Church and to all humanity.

104 Healing Miracles through Our Lady of Lourdes
Friday Mar 24, 2023
Friday Mar 24, 2023
The Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous 18 times, between February 11, 1858, and July 16, 1858, in a grotto within a massive granite formation called Massabielle. This is near the mountain town of Lourdes, on the French Pyrenees. Among other messages, Our Lady encouraged everyone to pray the Rosary and do penance for sinners. When asked what her name was, the ‘Lady of the Grotto’ answered “I am the Immaculate Conception.” The site has been—for more than 165 years—a pilgrimage destination, and a place where many (thousands) of miracles of spiritual and physical healing occurred. In this episode I welcome Emma Shea and discuss with her some of her experiences when visiting the shrine, and some of the history and spirituality of the apparitions. We also talk about the Spiritual Testament of St. Bernadette Soubirous.

- I mentioned in the podcast that the part of the spiritual testament of St. Bernadette Soubirous could be found in Trochu, Abbe Francois, Saint Bernadette Soubirous, however, the correct source is Marcelle Auclair, Bernadette, trans. by Kathryn Sullivan (Purchase, NY. Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart, 1958), 194-195.

In this episode we look into the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, how it was instituted by Christ himself, how it is celebrated and the spiritual benefits it has for your soul. - The Scriptural references are: Mk 6:12-13 (the apostles anointed many with oil); Jas 5:14-15 (St. James exhorts the Christians to call the priests to anoint those who are sick).
